Towel Embroidery
Loop-pile yarn stitched like terry cloth, for a raised chenille texture rather than flat thread.
Towel embroidery, also sold as chenille, uses a special foot on the machine that holds the yarn above the fabric so the stitches form loops instead of lying flat. The finished motif has the soft, nubby surface of terry towelling and picks up light differently from the surrounding garment.
That is why it is used for large playful graphics and vintage-style lettering. Because the yarn is thick, the artwork has to be simplified — small text and tight curves are dropped or stitched in flat thread alongside.
